Position description

The Possibility Lab, led by Professor Amy Lerman at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar in political science, sociology, economics or a related field with a focus on applied public policy, social inequality, civic engagement, and/or racial justice.

The position is a full-time research opportunity that provides freedom to develop one's own research agenda (50%), as well as expectations to collaborate with Possibility Lab faculty, faculty affiliates, and research staff on current and new research projects.

The Possibility Lab focuses on community-engaged, data-driven innovation for the public good. Possibility Lab projects cover a range of topics, from criminal justice to housing and public health, with a focus on data-driven public policy research that is co-designed in collaboration with government and community partners. These partnerships often involve descriptive data analysis of large administrative data, conducting and analyzing surveys, and designing and implementing randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program at the time of application.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • PhD (or equivalent international degree).
  • No more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.
    Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in public service, public policy, field experiments, and community organizing.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay organized and meet research deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to advance diversity, equity, and belonging to establish and maintain positive and professional working relationships with colleagues, students, staff members and practitioner partners.
  • Ability to facilitate discussions about topics that advance racial equity and community engagement.
